The government has officially backflipped on its proposed $3 million super tax, and it’s a big one for anyone with a self-managed fund.

Originally, the plan was to tax unrealised gains at 30% for super balances over $3 million, meaning you’d pay tax on paper profits, even if you hadn’t sold the asset.

Now, they’ve changed direction. Only realised gains will be taxed, so you’ll only pay once an asset is actually sold.

The $3 million cap will now move with inflation, and a new $10 million tier is coming in: ➡️ 30% tax on balances between $3M-$10M ➡️ 40% tax on anything over $10M

It’s a major policy shift and a good reminder to check in on your SMSF strategy.
